Alonti’s Wedding Soup Copycat

Alonti Wedding Soup

Today is the first pleasantly cool day that we’ve had here in Houston in God only knows when and I am SO happy.  Now, I know it’s officially Fall, but it has been so freaking hot here and I need a real cold snap to start making those warm and comfortable soups and stews !!!  So…I decided to throw caution to the wind and open the side and back doors, turn on the music (as someone is recoding football on TV!!) and make a stab at this soup.  It’s a great day in the Heights today listening to Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson and Zac Brown with this luscious soup bubbling on the stove…and my little Jaxie cat at my feet.

I guess I can’t blame Alonti’s Cafe for keeping this soup a secret because it is fantastic.  I was nicely surprised how similar the taste is for this recipe compared to the actual soup.  Quite yummy, very creamy and downright simple.

Alonti Cafe is near the building I worked at in downtown Houston, but in the underground tunnel system.  We would order lunches from Alonti and this was always the favorite. Then we’d all discuss how they made this really great soup…like we were all going to go home and actually make it.  One day I found this recipe at one of those copycat sites and here we are…

So, open the doors wide, turn up the music loud and get to cookin’…and make sure to wear your flip flops…it’s almost soup season…

  • Total time:
  • Yield: 6-8
  • Difficulty: easy

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs chicken breast & thigh, boneless
  • 1 stick butter
  • 3 cups celery, minced
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 1 bunch green onions, minced
  • 1 small bunch Italian parsley, minced
  • 1 32oz carton chicken broth
  • 3 cups cream or half & half
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 2 Tbs oregano
  • 1 tsp white pepper
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2-3 bay leaves

Directions:

  1. Cut all the chicken into bite size pieces, about 1 inch cubes.  Melt butter in dutch-oven size pot and add chicken pieces, cooking  over medium-high heat about 5-10 minutes.  Chicken will turn white but not be completely cooked.

  2. Add onion, celery, green onions, parsley, bay, oregano, salt and white pepper to chicken.  Cook till veggies are tender, about 5-10 minutes.

  3. Pour cream, chicken broth and water into pan and simmer about 20 minutes.

  4. Add orzo and simmer till tender.  Taste for salt.

  5. Simple, easy luscious.

omg, thank you!! I’ve searched in vain EVERYWHERE for a mock up of this soup. I no longer work in downtown, and there isn’t really an Alonti anywhere you can just pop in and out of fairly easily. Can’t wait to try this to quell the cravings! :)
