The Many Ways of Meatballs

Yummy Swedish Meatballs!

I think most everyone has gone to a bridal shower or baby shower and seen a crock-pot simmering on the side full of these meatballs.  I know I have and I still love them…however they are fixed.

I really like the simplicity and versatility of these.   I always use frozen meatballs when I make these in the crock-pot because I intend to cook them slowly all day and they become very tender and flavorful.  You can make the meatball sauce with any cream of something soup…like mushroom, chicken, celery…whatever you like…..BUT…when I made them, I got to thinking about all the possible variations and decided to add them here.

So, to your large bag (38oz ish) of whatever kind of frozen meatballs you like, put them in the slow-cooker and add….

  • BBQ – Use your favorite bbq sauce, maybe a little water to thin.  Perfect snacky food or sandwich.
  • Tex-Mex – Add one jar salsa with 1 pkg taco seasoning OR can of Rotel with Velveeta?  Might make really good tacos?
  • Italian – A jar of your fave spaghetti sauce.  Serve over pasta OR make a meatball sub with provolone and a toasted bun!  Yum.
  • Hot wing sauce – Mix 1/2 cup each Buffalo wing sauce, melted butter, peach jam & 2 tsp garlic..maybe add some chili garlic paste?  Or make one with honey and soy sauce?
  •  Chili sauce – Mix a jar of grape jelly with a jar of chili sauce.  Great appetizer.
  • Teryaki – Mix a 12-16oz jar soy sauce, 1/3 cup honey, 2 Tbs vinegar, 1 Tbs garlic, 1 tsp ginger together and add some sliced green onions… chili paste too.  Serve over rice noodles.
  • Brown gravy – Mix 2 pkgs brown gravy mix with 1 can beef broth and 1 can water…maybe add onions and mushrooms too?  Great over mashed potatoes for dinner!!
  • Onion soup – Add Lipton’s dry onion soup mix with a can of beef broth, 1 can water and 1 cup sour cream.  Great over noodles or mashed potatoes.
  • Mustard – Mix a jar of mustard with honey or brown sugar to taste…with a bit of water to thin OR mix mustard with apple or currant jelly.  Or make it spicy and add garlic.

That’s all I can think of right now.  Just play with the different variations and throw it in the slow-cooker on top of the meatballs.  The trick is cooking them in a slow-cooker so the meat gets really tender…so good.  Cook on low about 6 hours or high about 4 and you have dinner ready and waiting!!!

Yay…couldn’t be easier y’all…

The Many Ways of Meatballs

  • Prep time:
  • Cook time:
  • Total time:
  • Yield: 6
  • Difficulty: easy

Ingredients:

  • 38oz pkg frozen meatballs
  • 2 cans cream of something soup, I used chicken

Directions:

  1. In addition to the cream of chicken soup, I used 1/2 of an 8oz bar of cream cheese, a dash of Worcestershire and added 1 can water to try something different, but it’s very good either way.  The cream of mushroom is really good too.  By the way…I tried the Kroger meatballs shown above and really did not care for them that much.  I normally use another brand but they were out.

  2. So, just dump the meatballs in the pot and pour the soup (or whatever kind of sauce you want to try) over them and cook away.  I love it when you get to ‘dump’ food…it’s just always easier….

  3. These were awfully tasty served over buttered noodles…Loved them… And SO simple to come home to after being away all day.

My sister does them with BBQ sauce and a jar of grape jelly. Sounds like all you need is the meatballs, sauce, crockpot and some toothpicks and you’ve got yourself a party!
