Traditional Guacamole

I’m an avocado lover.  I can eat them on a sandwich or straight out of the shell with salt sprinkled over it, but my favorite way is by making guacamole.  There are hundreds of versions of this tasty dish and I’ve tried several…did I mention that I’ll try just about anything?

With guacamole, I’m a traditionalist. I believe in letting the true flavors come through by keeping the ingredients very basic and I like it creamy with little chunks of avocado showing.  When I make a Mexican/Tex-Mex themed dinner, guacamole is almost always on the menu for that evening.

What is your favorite way to make guacamole?

Traditional Guacamole

  • Yield: 4-6
  • Difficulty: easy

Ingredients:

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1/4 cup minced onion
  • 1 jalapeno, minced
  • 1 lime
  • tomato, cilantro or pico, optional

Directions:

  1. When you choose your avocados, make sure they ‘give’ some when you squeeze them – you don’t want them hard or mushy.  Peel avocados, scoop the meat out with a spoon and place in a bowl.  Add minced onion,  jalapeno,  juice from 1/2 lime and salt.  Stir with a fork till creamy or the consistency you prefer and taste for salt and lime.

  2. Sometimes I add chopped cilantro, powdered garlic, pico de gallo and/or a spoon a salsa.  Just depends on my mood!
